The Dark Tower (2017) Movie Details

The Dark Tower is a 2017 American science fantasy western film directed and co-written by Nikolaj Arcel. A continuation of Stephen King’s novel series of the same name, the film stars Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, a gunslinger on a quest to protect the Dark Tower – a mythical structure which supports all realities – and Matthew McConaughey as his nemesis, Walter o’Dim, the Man in Black.

Intended to launch a film and television franchise, the first installment combines elements from several novels in the eight-volume series, as well as elements from The Shining and Doctor Sleep, taking place in both modern-day New York City and in Mid-World, Roland’s Old West-style parallel universe. Arcel has said that fans will know the film is a sequel to the books’ events. The film premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on July 31, 2017, and was theatrically released in the United States on August 4, 2017 by Columbia Pictures. The Dark Tower has grossed $27 million and received generally negative reviews, with criticism focused on its incomprehensible plot and unfaithfulness to King’s novels, though Elba and McConaughey’s performances received some praise.

10 Great Reasons to Watch The Dark Tower Full Movie

I think the harsh negative reviews for this movie comes from people who really are hardcore fans of the book. I get it. When you’re a hardcore fan you want something more true to the art. There are also some people who are mad about the casting of Roland — I’m gonna ignore them. On its own the movie is entertaining to me. The acting was very good. I really think all of the characters played their parts well. It wasn’t hard to follow — I think it could have been longer maybe a ful 2 hours, but it was what it was. I don’t know why so many people are saying they didn’t understand. I thought Roland’s character and Jakes character had a nice bond that made the movie intimate. As a sequel it could actually start a whole new set of books. There is also opening for more storyline, battles and characters.

The Harry Potter movies at least attempted to follow the books. And did fairly well. Anyone who didn’t read the Potter books were also able to follow the movies. This however…
I knew they wouldn’t get it right. Especially towards the end. They should’ve at least combined books 1 & 2 to make it interesting.
And the dialogue…UUFFF!
Idris is a good actor…just not a good Roland.
Just stop.

I’m a big fan of the books, but I knew going in to the movie that it wasn’t an adaptation of any one (or more) of the books. It was more like a sequel or a continuation or a new adventure. I enjoyed the movie and I thought the two lead actors did their characters justice. I did think the movie was too short, though, and could have benefited the audience with more backstory regarding the longtime struggle between the Gunslingers and the MIB. I also thought they should have explained about the Crimson King and specifically how the destruction of the tower would reap destruction on all the worlds. I was also surprised that Roland had all of his fingers but also missing his iconic (imo) hat.

The movie is awesome! Ka IS a wheel, this is just a different loop. Everything in the movie happened in the books, just maybe not in that order or manner. Leave your expectations at the door and you will enjoy it.

Just like with the Harry Potter movie when it first came out, the only real hate this movie is getting are from people who were hell bent to see a movie that was an exact, cinema version of the books. Congratulations, you played yourself for thinking that it’d be the books to a T, it was an adaptation. As far as hardcore SK fans go, SK himself signed off on, approved, and enjoyed the final product of the movie itself. So what does your opinion matter in that regard.

It was a great movie, extremely entertaining, enough so to get me interested in reading the books for the original story outside of what my wife has told me of the books (everything). And, to be entirely honest, I was kind of glad that the movie wasn’t as dark as the books themselves, because that sort of darkness would’ve likely just made for an extremely depressing movie experience. So, definitely looking forward to the next movie(s) to get this version of SK’s greatest epic.

This movie was as badass as a pg13 sequel to the books could be. Thankee sai and keep em comin. Wish HBO would just do the series already.

Will Dearborn…please make the series! My inner fourteen year old NEEDS to see Cuthbert Allgood on screen. And release an extended cut Blu-ray. It can do you WORLDS of good.

This was less of a Dark Tower movie and more of an action film that just happened to have a lot of Dark Tower “Easter eggs”. I left the theatre disappointed.

This movie SUCKED!!!! Didn’t follow the book at all!!! The books were great. In the book the gun slinger was trying to get to the tower. The man in black was trying stop him. Ugh!!!!! I want my 1 hr back of my time!!!! Someone please make a better version of this movie.
